A Brief History of Greater  Manchester Transport's Depots

Greater  Manchester Transport's depots consisted mainly of those  it had acquired from each of the corporations which  formed it as well as those of LUT. Depots operated by GMT  were:

AM -  Altrincham - Oakfield Road

AN - Atherton  - Howe Bridge (LUT)

BN - Bolton -  Shiffnall Street ( Bridgeman Street & Crook Street)

BS -  Birchfields Road - Manchester

BY - Bury -  Rochdale Road (Ramsbottom - Stubbins Lane)

FK -  Frederick Road - Salford

HE - Hyde  Road - Manchester

HY - Hindley  - Capps Street, Platt Bridge (LUT)

LH - Leigh -  Holden Road

NN -  Northenden - Harper Road

OM - Oldham -  Wallshaw Street

PS - Princess  Road - Manchester

QS - Queens  Road - Manchester

RE - Rochdale  - Mellor Street

SN - Swinton  - Partington Lane (LUT)

ST -  Stockport - Daw Bank (Charles Street)

TE - Tameside  - Stalybridge Tame Street (Ashton-under-Lyne -  Mossley Road & Glossop - York Street)

WE - Weaste -  Salford

WN - Wigan -  Melverly Street

When Greater  Manchester Transport's operating side became GM Buses,  some depots were closed. The depots that GM Buses  originally operated are shown below:

AM -  Altrincham - Oakfield Road

AN - Atherton  - Howe Bridge

BN - Bolton -  Crook Street

BY - Bury -  Rochdale Road

HE - Hyde  Road - Manchester

OM - Oldham -  Wallshaw Street

PS - Princess  Road - Manchester

QS - Queens  Road - Manchester

RE - Rochdale  - Mellor Street

SN - Swinton  - Partington Lane

ST -  Stockport - Daw Bank & Charles Street

TE - Tameside  - Whitelands Road, Ashton-under-Lyne & York Street,  Glossop

WN - Wigan -  Melverly Street

GM Buses was  organised into four different operating areas, each with  its own head office:

NORTH AREA

Head Office: Bury Interchange

Depots:
BY - Bury, Rochdale Road
QS - Queens Road, Manchester
RE - Rochdale, Mellor Street

SOUTH AREA

Head Office: Daw  Bank, Stockport

Depots:
AM - Altrincham, Oakfield Road
PS - Princess Road, Manchester
ST - Stockport, Daw Bank

EAST AREA

Head Office: Wallshaw Street, Oldham

Depots:
HE - Hyde Road, Manchester
OM - Oldham, Walshaw Street
TE - Tameside, Whitelands Road, Ashton-under-Lyne
TE - Glossop, York Street

WEST AREA

Head Office: Howe Bridge, Atherton

Depots:
AN - Atherton, Howe Bridge
BN - Bolton, Crook Street
SN - Swinton, Partington Lane
WN - Wigan, Melverley Street

When GM Buses was split into GM Buses North  and GM Buses South in 1993/4, more depots had closed.  Shown below are the depots operated by each company when  they first became operational:
