Major Changes in Manchester

Cannon Street in Manchester will  close on Saturday 30th August 2003 with bus  services moved to other city centre stops as from Sunday  31st August.

Services will be moved to various locations  including Corporation Street, Stevenson Square, and the  new Exchange Bus Station which is currently being built.

Arndale Bus Station

The Arndale Bus Station was opened on 24th  September 1979, costing £1.75 million and closed on  Saturday 15th June 1996, as it never re-opened after the  bomb in Manchester City Centre. The Bus Station has  recently been taken over by Bovis, along with the rest of  the northern part of the Arndale Centre ready for  re-development along with Cannon Street.

Cannon Street has been a City Centre  terminus for a long time, and 'Arndale' has been used for  many years as a destination for buses terminating on  Cannon Street and formerly in the bus station. As from  31st August this will change with rumours that Greengate  will be used once again, for the first time since the  emergency diversions were removed after the bomb.

A new transport interchange is to be built  next to the new Metrolink station at Shudehill, but this  will not be completed in time for the closure of Cannon  Street which is to be converted into an undercover  shopping street. This has meant that temporary measures  have had to be taken, including the re-opening of  Victoria Bus Station, until the new interchange is ready,  possibly for a period of around 18 months.

Exchange Bus Station

Exchange Bus Station is the new name for Victoria  Bus Station which is currently being remodelled,  ready for re-opening. It had previously been used as a  car park after being closed as a bus station for several  years.

Victoria Bus Station is actually located in  Salford, just over the boundary between Manchester and  Salford. It is located next to the former Exchange  Station approach bridge which is now used as a car park,  along with the station site.
